Week 1 Science Methods 2

 

  1. The big question addressed in lab, and a description of what you did.
    1. How do we make a race exciting between people who walk at different speeds? We had two people speed-walk race. One person walked backward and one person walked forward, but started three seconds later than the person walking backward. We found that the three second head start for the person walking backward was too much of a head start, and the person walking backward won four out of five times. To make it more of an even/exciting race, we lowered the head start to only two seconds. We only had time to perform one race with this, but the race ended in a tie.   2. A description of what you learned in Thursday's lecture. In lecture today I learned how to measure speed. To measure speed you need to divide time from distance. Speed = Distance/Time. 
  3. Answer questions about the weekly textbook reading:
    1. What did you learn? Something that I learned is that you need two things to describe a position; Distance and Direction. 
    2. What was most helpful? Something that was very helpful and appealing for me was how many photos and videos the site has to better understand the material in different ways. I am a very hands on and visual learner, so I need multiple different forms of the material for me to understand it the best. 
    3. What do you need more information on? The metric system, I never know how many centimeters are in an inch, how many inches in a foot, etc. I feel like I should know those better. 
    4. What questions/concerns/comments do you have? None right now!

 1. What did you learn this week? This week we learned about a few different life cycles. We learned about the mealworm lifecycle, the butterfly lifecycle, plant lifecycles, and more. We also got to make physical lifecycles with play dough. We chose to make the butterfly lifecycle. The butterfly lifecycle has four different stages. The Egg stage, the caterpillar stage, the chrysalis stage, and the butterfly stage.  Another thing we did this week was we started growing our own fast plants! The lifecycle of a fast plant is really short. Once you plant seeds, our plant will have harvestable seeds in about 40 days. That’s only a little over a month! The instructions for planting the fast plants was: 1. Drop one wick into each cell so that the tip extends about 2cm out of the hole of the bottom. 2. Fill each cell halfway with the potting mix. 3. Week 5

 What did you learn this week?  This week we learned more about the 5Es and we critiqued an actual lesson plan. We got to see how we all scored the lesson plan and we got to hear everyone's different reasonings. It was very interesting. See below image.  We also started to learn about Ecology , which is the study of organisms and how the relate to one another and their physical surroundings.  We also checked in on our butterflies and our fast plants. One out of three of our butterflies have come out of their chrysalis phase. Our fast plants have also grown quite a bit in the last week. See images below.  Are you able to relate what you learned to what you already know?  I am able to relate what we have learned to what I already know because I already know about animals and different places. What I didn't know a whole lot about was how the different animals and organisms interact with each other and how many ecosystems there are.  How can you apply what...

Week 4

What did you learn this week? This week we learned about different lesson segments and different ways you can change up the lesson segments depending on what you are teaching. We also learned a lot about the 5E model of science instruction. The 5Es are: Engage, Explore, Explain, Extend, and Evaluate.  We also got to check up on our fast plants. I was amazed at how fast (excuse my pun) these plants really do grow! Please look at the picture below of our fast plants.  Next we got to check up on our butterflies. They are currently in their chrysalis phase and will hopefully be coming out of that phase and into the butterfly phase soon!
