Week 6

What did you learn this week?

This week we learned about turtles! Some things that we learned are that turtle eggs are buried in the sand to keep them safe. Once they hatch, their journey to the top of the sand takes about three days. Another thing we learned that is kind of sad to think about is that only about one in one thousand turtles survive to adulthood. There are many reasons for this; polluted oceans, predators, vehicles on the beach, etc.  In class, we filled out this worksheet about human and natural factors when it comes to helping or harming turtles.

Here is our updated fast plants. They have grown yellow flowers! They are growing so tall they aren't able to stand up straight as much. It really has amazed me how fast they truly do grow. Below is the picture I took on Wednesday of my fast plant.

Are you able to relate what you learned to what you already know?

Yes. I already had a little bit of background knowledge on turtles because I really liked Crush from Finding Nemo so that made me want to learn more about turtles when I was younger. Learning that only one in one thousand turtles make it to adulthood really makes you put things into perspective and want to do better with recycling and other preventative measures.

How can you apply what you've learned to your teaching in the future?

Something that we did in class today that I will apply to my future classroom was using the paper fortune tellers. We were all "turtles" and we all stood up and then were given a random number, then letter. Whatever flap that landed on we had to open and it said something like "You got eaten by a cat, sit down" and the last person standing after a few rounds made it to the ocean/adulthood. I think these will be helpful in any subject, not just science.

  1. Hi Taryn! You did a great job of explaining the game for something you could apply in your future teaching. I was also amazed at how much our fast plants developed within the past week! Great job!

  2. Great post Taryn! I enjoy that you tied in our turtle activites from class and tied it in with Finding Nemo. I think a lot of kids (and myself) enjoy that movie and it can be a great tie into science!

  3. Hi Taryn,
The plants are getting so big!! I think it's so sad how many turtles never make it to adulthood because of damages humans have made to their environment. But it's definitely a good teaching opportunity. Great post!
