Week 4

What did you learn this week?

This week we learned about different lesson segments and different ways you can change up the lesson segments depending on what you are teaching. We also learned a lot about the 5E model of science instruction. The 5Es are: Engage, Explore, Explain, Extend, and Evaluate.

We also got to check up on our fast plants. I was amazed at how fast (excuse my pun) these plants really do grow! Please look at the picture below of our fast plants.

Next we got to check up on our butterflies. They are currently in their chrysalis phase and will hopefully be coming out of that phase and into the butterfly phase soon! Please see updated picture below of our butterflies in their chrysalis phase.

Are you able to relate what you learned to what you already knew?

Yes. I knew already that there were more lesson segments than what I knew/could name. It was interesting to see that there are different ways you can organize and do the segments depending on different lessons.

How can you apply what you've learned to your teaching in the future?

I will definitely be implementing the 5Es into my future teaching because of how detailed and in depth it is. There are so many parts, which makes me think there are so many different ways the students will learn and I think that is very beneficial.

  1. Hi Taryn! I loved your post and your fast plant update;) I like how you mentioned the 5E Model creating opportunities for so many different ways for your students to learn. I like this model and will implement it in my future teaching as well. Great post!

  2. Hi Taryn,
I think it is a good quality to admit that as a teacher education student you are willing to learn new ways to present lessons and possibly incorporate them into your future classroom. I also can't wait to see our butterflies!!

  3. Hi Taryn! I also really liked learning about the 5E Model of Science Instruction. I think having a strong basis for every lesson will help the students and you as a teacher know what to expect from each lesson. It also acts as a strong foundation and makes you think about each step of your lesson.
